Come enjoy a presentation on the history of Copperton and Bingham Canyon by authors/historians Tim Dumas and Scott Crump.
The town of Copperton, the last surviving town of Bingham Canyon, celebrates its centennial in 2026. To commemorate this milestone, the Quilt and Crafts Club of SpringHouse Village created a quilt showing the connection between Daybreak and Copperton. The quilt will be on display at the Daybreak Library throughout the month of May.
Tim Dumas is the author of two books about Bingham Canyon, one about the canyon, the other about the mine. Tim worked at the mine as his father and grandfather did before him. He has a love for trains and Bingham. His motto is to "Keep Bingham’s history alive".
Scott Crump is a retired teacher and a local historian. He has written several books including histories of Copperton, Riverton and Bingham High School.
South Jordan residents live in a unique place unlike anywhere else on earth. Our western neighbor, the Bingham Copper Mine, is the largest manmade excavation on earth. It is so deep that it is visible from outer space. And yet, many Daybreak residents are unaware of its rich history. The mine has a unique physical beauty but its true value is captured in its stories of immense human effort. It is a story of immigrants and their families, of workers toiling to transform what was once an 8,400 foot mountain into a pit 3,900 feet deep- the equivalent of two Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other. It is a story of humanity with all its hopes and flaws, its sorrows and joys.
Copperton, the only remaining town of Bingham Canyon, is celebrating its centennial in 2026. In a joint effort to mark this milestone and to generate more interest in local history, the Quilt and Craft Club and the Bingham Canyon History of SpringHouse have created the Copperton Centennial Quilt and planned events featuring local historians and speakers. Understanding the landscape, the mine and the people who used to live in Bingham Canyon enhances our living experience here. Our goal is clear, “Keep Bingham History Alive”
