Binford will discuss the biodiversity of arachnids and why they are inspiring, her travels searching for spiders, and her research on spider venom.
Dr. Greta Binford is a Professor of Biology at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. She loves biological diversity - particularly arachnids. In her lab, students participate in evolutionary analysis of spider venoms at all levels of the process. Her commitment to her students earned her the title of Oregon Professor of the Year in 2011. Greta has collected and studied spiders all over the world. She's been profiled in The New Yorker magazine, in a public television episode of NOVA and in the book, Silk and Venom: Searching for a Dangerous Spider by Kathryn Lasky. She even has a spider named after her, Austrarchaea binfordae.
